I have observed distinct performance degradation having installed the latest batch of MS Office updates dated December 2010.
Confusingly, these updates claim to be performance enhancing so perhaps the problem lies with the GMS Outlook plug-in?

No, the problem is likely to be due to the recently installed updates. Several of our own Outlook e-mail clients have exhibited this sluggish behaviour following installation of the MS updates. Upon closer
inspection we have since discovered that update 2412171 is responsible.
Please see the Microsoft KB below and follow the instructions to uninstall the 2412171 update to see if this resumes normal operating usability.
