Why does certain UUEncoded mail cause a trap in AIX?

Answer

This was caused by the fact that under AIX a type of "char" is unsigned. While decoding a uuencoded message the unsigned type caused an out of range error resulting in a trap.

From build 3136 onwards the type used has been changed from a "char" to an "int" which allows processing to complete correctly.
