Yes. A custom status message can be added to your GMS Instant Messenger presence information at any time. This is shown in addition to the standard status information, it does not replace it. This is useful if you wish to give additional information, as an example, your standard status information may show you as being at lunch, you could add a custom status string to let others know where you are lunching.
