Can GMS work in conjunction with either a Blackberry BIS or BES setup?

There are two distinct services available for use with Blackberry devices, BIS (Blackberry Internet Solution) and BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server). Which of these you choose for use with your device will depend on whether or not you run an in-house BES server, if you do not have one you must chosse the BIS option.

GMS is a platform independent robust Messaging solution that provides support for the three most commonly used mail retrieval protocols: HTTP, POP and IMAP.

As the Blackberry Internet Solution is also compatible with these protocols, this makes it possible for GMS to function in a BIS environment. Further information can be found at the Blackberry website.

GMS does not inter-operate with BES servers as they use a proprietary protocol. However other options that also work with Blackberry devices are available to provide the same facilities in conjunction with GMS. Further information is available under the Wireless Access section of our web site.
