When I send a message from Outlook, an attachment called winmail.dat is added to the message.

This is a function of Outlook when it is configured to send mail using ‘MS Outlook Rich text’ format. Click Tools, Options, Mail Format, Internet Format… and under Outlook Rich Text options choose either ‘Convert to HTML format’ or ‘Convert to Plain Text format’.
