Outlook, reports an error when sending an email

Symptoms

When trying to send a message from Outlook, the following error message is returned.

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients…550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for name@domain.com

Cause

Microsoft Outlook reports this error if the message was rejected by the SMTP server.
This can be because of one of two reasons:

  • The Relay settings are not configured correctly and WorkgroupMail is rejecting the senders message.
  • Outlook is communicating with a mail server other than WorkgroupMail.

Detail

Microsoft Outlook reports this error if the message was rejected by the SMTP server. This can be because of one of two reasons:

  • Ensure that the IP address of the computer running Outlook is permitted to relay through WorkgroupMail and/or that the mail client is configured to use SMTP authentication through WorkgroupMail.
  • Ensure that Outlook is not communicating with another mail server which may also be running and conflicting with Workgroupmail on the same computer. Please ensure that the IIS SMTP service is not running. Click Here for more information
