How can I connect to my Softalk Organizer web server across The Internet?

Symptoms

You have a remote computer that needs to be able to connect to the Softalk Organizer server across the internet.

More Info

Softalk Organizer clients connect to the web server using standard web protocol on port 80, so connections can be made from any Windows computer on your network or across the internet. Internet connections can be made directly across the internet, through a VPN link or via a dial up connection to a remote access server on your network.

Detail

For a client to be able to connect to Softalk Organizer, you must first be able to establish a network connection from your remote computer to the Softalk Organizer web server computer. The most common way to achieve this is to ensure that the web server has a direct connection to the internet and that the server (or the router) has a static IP address. Port 80 on the router would need to be port forwarded to the Softalk Organizer web server computer. The remote computer can then use a direct connection or a dial up connection to access the internet and the remote Softalk Organizer web server.

If you have a firewall protecting your network then you will need to open port 80. Note. If you do not have a static IP address for your server or router then it is still possible for you to access the Softalk Organizer web server remotely. To do this you would need to subscribe to a dynamic DNS service which would give you a domain name that would track your changing IP address. You would specify the servers address by the domain name given rather than the IP address.
