Symptoms
WorkgroupMail fails to start on Windows 2003 server giving the error “The local mail servers could not be started! Check your interfaces in the settings property sheet.”
Cause
Another program may be listening on ports 25, 110 or 143. For example, the error will occur if the Microsoft SMTP Service is running.
More Info
This error applies to WorkgroupMail v7.2 and later. Earlier versions do not run on Windows 2003 server.
Detail
To overcome the problem, go to the services applet in Administrator Tools in Control Panel and ensure that the Simple Mail Transport Protocol and POP3 services are stopped and disabled.
