Why does Outlook keep trying to send a message that is being rejected?

Question

An Outlook user keeps attempting to send a message over and over again. Each time they send it it is being correctly rejected by the Juce filtering that is in place. What can I do to stop Outlook attempting to resend this message?

Answer

It is up to the Outlook user to stop this message being resent. The mail server will reject the message with a 5xx permanent failure message and Outlook will also flag up an error to the user.

The problem is that Outlook error messages are not very clear and are often ignored by users. Outlook itself does not act on messages that fail and leaves them in the Outbox from where it will attempt to resend the message again the next time the user checks their mail.

The only way to stop Outlook attempting to resend the message is to physically remove it from the Outbox. It requires intervention from the end user to do this.

Note: This is an issue with Outlook and not with GMS software.
