Why does an attachment report a different size when saved by webmail?

Question

Certain attachments when saved to disk by GLWebMail do not appear to be saved correctly. The size of the attachmnt as written to disk is different to the size seen by GLWebMail.

Answer

The particular attachment causing this issue has been deliberately encoded with illegal characters and over long encoded line lengths in order to attempt to circumvent the MIME decoding options in Anti Virus software.

This in turn caused the MIME decoding functions within GLWebMail to omit the illegal characters when saving the attachment to disk and hence cause a mismatch in size.

The MIME decoding functions within GLWebMail have been updated to cope with the illegal characters and attachments containing these characters are now saved to disk correctly.
