Why do some, but not all, recipients of my message receive winmail.dat attachments

Question

I sent a message, with attachments, to several people. Some of the recipients received the attachments correctly but others received winmail.dat attachments.

Answer

If you send an email with an attachment using rtf formatting in Outlook,
the attachment is delivered as a file called winmail.dat.

Outlook has an address book setting "Send email by plain text
only". All address book entries with this option selected will receive
attachments correctly. Entries for which the setting is not configured will
be ‘rtf’ formatted and sent as as a file called winmail.dat.
