Why do my users occasionally have problems logging on to GMS Webmail?

Question

I am using the Windows 2000 SAM to hold my user information and every so often my users have problems logging on. This normally clears up after a short period of time with the users then being able to log on normally.

I enabled logging options for the WWW service and when I take a look in the log I see the following failure.

WWW 23 May 2002 10:50:29.376 F 0326 Failed user validation (user@domain.dom) (1311)

What does this mean?

Answer

GMS Webmail attempted to authenticate the user but the operating system returned an error. Checking Microsoft’s documentation, error 1311 means "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.". This indicates that the logon problem is caused by the operating system and not Gordano’s software. Other software using the logon information will also experience the same problem.

Customers have reported the following issues may cause this problem:

  • The PDC is overloaded and unable to handle authentication requests;
  • The PDC was not available (i.e. was being rebooted, network was down,
    etc.);

  • The BDC was not correctly set up;

To resolve the issue, you will need to contact Microsoft Support.
