Why do I have a message in my mail client Outbox I can't delete

Question

I have a message in my Outbox folder in Outlook, when I try to send it I get an error, and I also can’t delete the message, why is this and what can I do to fix this?

Answer

This problem occurs if you have GMS Anti-Spam set to block certain attachment types.

Outlook (or any other mail client) can create the message with the banned attachment, but when you try to send it, the message is rejected, and so stays in the Outbox.

If you then try to delete this message, Outlook is actually not deleting it but moving it to your Trash folder. At this time the GMS IMAP service checks the message again, and rejected it because of the banned attachment. The result is that you can’t send it or delete it.

To resolve this, select the message and hold down shift whilst pressing delete. This performs a “hard” delete rather than moving the message to trash.
