Why can't I add users after upgrading to 7A?

Question

This entry applies to occasions where the upgrade to version 7A fails, the system is rebooted/restarted and the upgrade is attempted a second time. On the second occasion, the upgrade appears to be successful, but it is not possible to add users.

You can confirm that you are suffering from this particular failure by opening regedt32.exe and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareInternetShopperMailPrivate. On the right hand side you will see a variable called UpdateAddressBooks, if this has a value of 4 please continue to follow the instructions below.

If this variable has a value of 7 please take a look at KB 505.

Answer

If the upgrade fails and is run a second time the upgrade omits the “Grants” table to the internal SQL database which is used to manage the address book. This failure renders GMS and/or GMS Webmail unable to communicate with the SQL database and therefore the address books can’t be updated when adding a new user. This causes the add user function to fail.

To solve this problem:

  1. Download a fresh set of SQL files from Gordano’s FTP site.
  2. Stop all the services.
  3. Start regedt32.exe and look for the following registry variable under “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > InternetShopper > Mail > Private > UpdateAddressBooks” and set the variable to the value 6.
  4. Install the SQL files into the MySqlDatamysql directory.
  5. Start all the services.
