Why are some messages with Office 2007 documents attached being rejected?

Question

Some messages with Office 2007 documents attached such as .docx and .xlsx files seem to get blocked by my server.

I do not have these file types in my banned attachment list, so why would these be blocked?

Answer

Office 2007 documents are in fact a compressed archive. The .docx or .xlsx file is actually a zipped archive that contains other files.

It’s common for this archive to contain a number of files which could be in your banned attachment list, usually this is a "bin" file.

If you have bin files blocked in your banned attachment list, try removing it. If you are still seeing messages blocked, rename the attachment that is being blocked to a .zip file, you can then open it to see what it contains, and which of these files is causing it to be banned.

You can then remove this attachment type from your banned attachment list.
