When I try to upgrade WorkgroupMail I receive the error message 'Unable to load setting file wmdata.dat'.

Symptoms

  1. Running the WorkgroupMail setup program results in the error ‘Unable to load setting file wmdata.dat’.
  2. Starting the WorkgroupMail Administrator or Server program results in the error ‘Unable to load setting file wmdata.dat’.

More Info

This information only applies to WorkgroupMail v7. In WorkgroupMail v7 the main mail server settings are stored in a binary file called wmdata.dat, located in the WorkgroupMail data folder. By default this is C:Program FilesWorkgroupMailData.

Detail

This error suggests that the Administrator, Server or Setup program either cannot find the wmdata.dat file or it cannot use it.

The file may have been deleted. If the file cannot be located, restore it from the most recent backup.

The file may have been written by a later version of WorkgroupMail. Check that the currently installed version is not newer than the version you are trying to install. In the Administrator click Help, About WorkgroupMail… Make sure that you are trying to install the latest release of WorkgroupMail v7. If the currently installed version states that it is an International version, check that the setup you are running is the most recent International version. Note that it is not possible to move from the International version to the standard version.

If none of the above apply and you still get the same error then the wmdata.dat file may be corrupt. You should make a copy of the existing wmdata.dat file and restore it from your most recent backup.
