When I try to start the WorkgroupMail Administrator or Server program I get the error 'Unable to load settings file WMData.dat!'

Symptoms

The following error is reported when starting the WorkgroupMail Administrator or Server program or when running setup to upgrade an installation.

Unable to load settings file WMData.dat!

Cause

The file, wmdata.dat, contains the configuration information for your WorkgroupMail v7 server. The Administrator or Server program cannot load this file if :-

  • The file is not in the correct location
  • The file is corrupt
  • The file is for a later version of WorkgroupMail

Resolution

The file is not in the correct location
For WorkgroupMail v7 check that the file is located in the WorkgroupMail data folder. For WorkgroupMail v6 check that the file is in the WorkgroupMail installation folder (C:Program FilesWorkgroupMail, by default). When running setup to re-install or upgrade WorkgroupMail you will be prompted with the current data folder path.

The file is corrupt
Copy out the file that is there and replace with a known working file, such as from a backup.

The file is for a later version of WorkgroupMail
You may have re-installed an older version of WorkgroupMail. Download and install the latest release of the appropriate version of WorkgroupMail (v6 or v7).

If the error persists, consider deleting the wmdata.dat file (or copying it to a safe location) and re-installing. Note that your settings will be lost and will need to be re-created.
