What is the difference between the zero-hour AV and AS checks

Question

Because the zero-hour checks work on pattern matching in delivery, I would expect the anti-spam detection to also catch outbreaks of viruses.

If this is correct, why would I need to also purchase GMS Anti-Virus?

Answer

When an outbreak of Spam or Virus email is detected, the messages are subjected to both automated and manual scrutiny to check that they are Virus or Spam traffic.

Depending on these results, messages are added to a different database in the online detection centers.

Because of this you should not expect the Anti-Spam Zero-hour checks to detect viruses in anything other than very rare cases during very early stages of an outbreak.

At all other times, the two tier AV detection provided by GMS Anti-Virus is required to fully protect your users from virus threats.
