What is SMTP.EXE – cancel timeout?

Question

Occasionally the the following error message is displayed by the system:

"SMTP.EXE - cancel timeout

the driver /Driver/NetBT failed to complete
a cancelled I/O request in the allotted time."

(Windows NT 3.51)

Answer

This is almost certainly to do with your network card. Some older cards do not have enough
buffer on the card to work properly with Windows NT (they may have been early 3Com
cards). This causes lost packets etc on the network. Replacing the card
(with another make) will resolve the problem and also speed
up other network connections.
