The operating system is a program that starts running when you turn on a computer and performs the basic tasks required to use the computer.

The operating system interacts with computer hardware, schedules tasks, maintains files and provides a default user interface. The operating system provides a platform on which applications such as word processors, spreadsheets and web browsers run.
