Sync Issues: How can I decode the GMS Collaboration error codes?

Question

I am running Gordano’s GMS Collaboration as a viable alternative to collaborative groupware functionality offered by MS Exchange.
Recently however, I seem to have encountered the occasional "Sync Issue".
What is this report and how can I troubleshoot the error code?

Answer

In most cases, this is nothing to worry about as a following sync is likely to either complete successfully, or resolve the intermittent error. Nevertheless, here are some steps to aid troubleshooting of the MAPI client:

A common error code found in a "Sync Issue" report is 0x800704d0
0x800704d0 breaks down into a code of 0x04d0 (trailing digits) or 1232 in decimal. The digit "7" is the facility number 7 which indicates a Win32 error.
MAPI specific errors use a different facility code of and therefore begin with 0x8004XXXX.

For valid Win32 errors you can type "net helpmsg 1232" into a CMD shell. In this example, this corresponds to "The network location cannot be reached."
This error would therefore imply a break in connectivity perhaps during a background sync.
