How to load Firefox's scrollbar on the left hand side

Question

As Arabic is both written and read from right to left users understandably prefer the scrollbar of the browser to reflect this – i.e. to load on the left hand side. By default however, Firefox will always position the vertical scrollbar of the browser according to Windows’ user interface settings.
Is there anything that can be done to change this?

Answer

If you are using an Arabic Operating System and your Windows locale is also Arabic, the scrollbar will automatically load correctly on the left of the browser. If, however, you have a European locale and the language preference within GMS is set to Arabic, Firefox will display the vertical scrollbar incorrectly on the right.

The workaround this you need to modify a Firefox user preference layout.scrollbar.side and set it to a value of 1. This indicates that it should position the scrollbar according to the flow of the html document rather than the user interface.

Follow these steps to make the scrollbar on the left permanent.

Enter about:config in the Location bar. Proceed by clicking the button “I’ll be careful, I promise”

  • Type layout.scrollbar.side in the “Filter”
  • Double-click the layout.scrollbar.side preference and change it to 1
