The US Army sent a convoy of trucks from Camp Meade (Maryland) to San Franciso in 1919, it took them two months at an average speed of 7 mph. The officer in charge was Dwight D Eisenhower who was to become President of the United States 35 years later. In 1956, he signed into law the landmark “Interstate Highway Act” which started the construction of 42,500 miles of superhighway.
