How can I remove references to obsolete Contacts folders in my Outlook Address Book list?

Symptoms

The Outlook Address Book list shows one or more Contacts folders that cannot be accessed.

Cause

When a Contacts folder (set to be displayed as an Outlook Address Book) is deleted, the folder still shows up in the Address Book list. Selecting the Contacts folder in the Address Book list gives an error. When deleting the folder, Outlook does not delete its Address Book reference.

When synchronizing with WorkgroupShare, shared Contacts folders can be set to be viewed as an Outlook Address Book. If this folder is unshared and then re-shared it will leave a ‘broken’ Contacts folder in the Outlook Address Book list.

Resolution

The reference to obsolete Contacts folders in the Address Book list need to be deleted manually. To remove these obsolete references click Tools, Email Accounts and select View or Change Existing Directories or Address Books. Click Next. Select the Outlook Address Book and click Change. All contacts folders will be displayed allowing you to remove the unwanted folders. Remember that you will need to close and reopen Outlook for this change to take effect.
