Does changing the timezone have any effect on timed events?

Question

Does changing the GMS and Servers Timezone cause problems with timed events in GMS?

Answer

If the server and the GMS Time zone are changed then existing timed events may need to be rescheduled to reflect the time zone change because they run in server time.

If the time zone you are changing from is prior to the time zone you are changing to, i.e. the time goes back e.g. 9:00 am to 6:00 am, then certain types of timed event which need to run frequently, such as Calendar alarms, will not run until the new time reaches the time set up prior to the time zone change. It should be noted that some timed events which should run at a specific time e.g. GMS Anti-Virus updates will run at the correct time as they will still be run based on the server date and time.

If the time zone you are changing to is after the time zone you are changing from, i.e. the time goes forward e.g. 12:00am to 8:00pm, then all the timed events scheduled in the original time zone between 12:00am to 8:00pm will run immediately. This may cause problems with timed events such as GMS Anti-Virus updates.

All user defined timed events should be reviewed to ensure that they are going to run at the correct time in the new time zone.

The most likely timed events to need rescheduling are calendar alarms, dialup and Webmail Collect from
POP.
