When I attempt to download a saved file from Document Management using Internet Explorer, the familiar 'Save as' prompt does not pop-up. Consequently, I am unable to retrieve the file. To workaround this I have to use Mozilla Firefox as it does not exhibit the same behavior. Why is this and what can be done?
In Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft introduced a new security feature into Internet Explorer which is intended to disallow the automatic downloading of files from web pages. As a consequence, where GMS WebMail is being accessed from outside the Local Internet zone, Internet Explorer may interpret an attempt to download a file within Document Management as an automatic download and will prevent it.

Although no error or warning message will be displayed, selecting either the "Download" or "Edit" actions for either documents or revisions will not raise the usual file download dialog.

To correct this error, ensure that the Internet Explorer option "Automatic prompting for file downloads" is enabled in the active zone for GMS WebMail. The simplest way to do this is to add the domain on which GMS WebMail is running to the list of Trusted Sites (if it is not already in the list of trusted sites) and reconfigure the Trusted Zone to enable the "Automatic prompting for file downloads" option. If you choose this approach you should be aware that automatic file downloading will also be enabled for any other sites which you have added to the listed of trusted sites.

Alternatively, you may choose to create a new Internet security zone in which the "Automatic prompting for file downloads" option is enabled and then assign only the GMS WebMail server to this zone. Creation of new security zones will require the use of tools or the direct manipulation of the registry and is beyond the scope of this document.
