Gordano Messaging Suite Receives Major Upgrade;

GMS Collaboration Server now gives full Outlook Integration providing a complete cross-platform MS Exchange alternate while still allowing full access to MS Outlook's Messaging Features.

Gordano Ltd. - an international developer of low-cost, web-based enterprise messaging products - has released Version 10 of the Gordano Messaging Suite, a multi-platform messaging system providing an easy-to-use alternative to Microsoft Exchange that is compatible with Windows (NT, XP, 2000, 2003), Linux (Redhat, Suse, Mandrake, Debian, etc), Solaris and AIX.

The release of the suite includes Version 3 of the GMS Collaboration Server, which provides full integration of Microsoft Outlook into the Gordano Messaging environment including the sharing of folders, calendars, contacts, notes, journals and tasks. The GMS Collaboration Server provides organizations with a realistic, fully functional alternative to Microsoft Exchange across a range of platforms while supporting Outlook's familiar features. In addition to providing features to users of Microsoft Outlook, calendars and tasks can be viewed and managed from a variety of clients, including Apple iCal, Mozilla Calendar, KDE Kontact, Bloomba and GMS WebMail.

"Gordano's Collaboration server gives users faced with expensive upgrades from Exchange 5.5 and other versions the option to choose their own fate outside of Redmond," said Dan Keldsen, CTO, Analyst and Consultant for the Delphi Group. "GMS is interesting because it offers compelling price/performance on a variety of OS platforms, well-engineered integration and sharing using alternate clients as well as straight Exchange replacement functionality."

GMS Collaboration synchronizes all information back to a central store, and different Outlook options are available for both synchronization and conflict resolution. Background synchronizations of either all information or net changes only, paired with an automatic synchronization at either logon or logoff, ensures that users view current information.

Other features of GMS Collaboration Server include:

  • Sharing: Folders, calendars, contacts, notes, journals and tasks can be shared between users. Granting access to read, write, amend or create is particularly granular with requests fully validated against access rights even in offline mode.
  • Cached Online Mode: A cached folder store is used, keeping the workload on the server to a minimum, resulting in increased server performance and scalability. All changes are synchronized in the background with no user intervention required.
  • Offline Mode: Users with no Internet connection or limited bandwidth can continue to work in Outlook offline managing email, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes and journals. All information is then synchronized with the server as soon as the user connects to update all folders and send out emails, etc. Access permissions are fully honoured while off line.
  • Web Access: Allows users to create, view and change shared calendar and address book entries. Updates are applied immediately.
  • Internet Free/Busy: A private free/busy server is included. Users can choose to publish their free/busy information. Checks will be made against users' calendars for availability if you need to schedule a meeting with them.
  • Multiple Client Access: In addition to MS Outlook, users can view and manage calendars using Apple iCal, Mozilla Calendar, KDE Kontact and Bloomba amongst other clients.
  • Alerts/Reminders: When a user sets an alert or reminder for an event, no matter what client they are using they will still receive the reminder.
  • Active Directory: Integration with Active Directory allows GMS to automatically create a new user account from information in the AD.
  • SSL Support: All messages/transactions can be encrypted using Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
  • HTTP Proxy: GMS includes a proxy server as standard. This allows multiple users to log on to the Internet from one connection, meaning only one port needs to be opened on the Firewall to allow access. GMS Collaboration Server is proxy 'friendly'.
  • Global Address Books: When typing a name into the 'To' field in Outlook, it will connect to the GMS server and check the address book for matching email addresses. This means users do not need to know the recipient's exact email address.
  • Public\Shared Folders: Both Public and Shared folders are supported allowing all authorized users access to information in those folders.
  • Virus Protection: GMS Anti Virus will provide bi-directional scanning of all data including shared folders.

"I could not be happier with my choice of GMS," said Rick Wagoner, president of CompuDoctor. "As a Microsoft Technical Partner I have access to a greatly reduced cost for Microsoft Exchange if I chose to use that product. I will not, however, as the maintenance overhead for GMS is a fraction of what it would cost to use and maintain MS Exchange."
